SOCHUM

The General Assembly Third Committee (GA3) is one of the six committees of the General Assembly, also known as Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Affairs Committee (SOCHUM). This committee deals with issues with a range of social, humanitarian affairs and human rights issues that affect people's lives all around the world. SOCHUM deals with questions not only relates to universal human rights, but also on the advancement of women, protection of children, indigenous issues, treatment of refugees, and the promotion of fundamental freedom through the elimination of racial discrimination.
Other important topics the committee addresses are questions relating to important social development; such as issues regarding the youth, an aging population, people with disability, crime prevention, criminal justice, and international drug control. The committee also works closely with other UN and non-UN bodies, including both governments and non-governmental organizations under the guidelines of the Charter of the United Nations to efficiently address its mandated issues.

TOPIC

Promotion of Women and Youth Involvement in Government

Picture
In the world where the youth population is taking over, it is important to promote better morals and necessary equality around the globe.  Women in government can make a huge difference; a research conducted on local councils in India discovered that the number of drinking water projects in the area with women-led councils was 62 percent higher than man-led councils. This is not the only difference found; there is growing evidence that women involved in political decision-making processes can improve current problems. By including women's leadership and involvement in government, the government can more effectively deal with issues of gender, such as gender-based violence, parental leave, and childcare by means such as creating more effective laws.

Nevertheless, currently, only a small fraction of the world's governments are made up by women, with only 18.3 percent of government ministers being women. Women that are elected to government positions can be challenging in many countries as they have disguise gender discrimination under the ideology of traditional conservative family values. Youth population is without a doubt going to be the future of society, so with that in mind, it is important to include them in major government decisions to promote better values and equality to ensure a better future.

Greetings! My name is Roxy Tsao, and I am currently a sophomore at I-Shou International School in Kaohsiung. I was born in South Africa and immigrated to Canada at the age of 1, but due to family reasons I moved back to Taiwan where my parents were originally from. I started my MUN career when I was a freshman, and since then the passion I have for MUN has developed deeper, in fact I have even become a student assistant in our schools Junior MUN club. Outside of MUN, I also participate in the school volleyball team and enjoy art and TV shows. I am honored to be serving as your chair and hope to meet you all soon !

I have been chairing for KCMUN for a while, and I am fully aware of how to train and guide inexperienced delegates. I am good at presentation and would be more than willing to design and give presentations for any given topic. Besides, I have organized a Ted conference for our school as a team leader for the PR department. Also, I have participated in numerous MUN held by different organizations and understand what qualities will be essential to constitute a great MUN conference. I am a person with enthusiasm who is willing to reach beyond the limits and to venture through territories that have not been discovered yet. I love working with people and have very flexible schedule. Since 9th grade, MUN has been the ray of sunshine that embellishes my after school hours; I sincerely hope that such passion and love for MUN can be passed down through my active participation in chairing.

Hello people, my name is Dylan and I currently study at Kang Chiao International School. In life, I like to help people and I would say I'm a nice person. I will try my best to help people even in the face of any conflicts. I play guitar, bass and drum, which allow me to immerse myself in the wonder world of rhythm and melody. I would say my strength is that I could adapt to a new environment pretty well and fast, and I am also a responsible person who knows what I am doing and chair with my own personality, but I wouldn't forget to cooperate with my team members. I am also a chair in my school, and I believe it's not important to have a position of main chair, as long as I learn things here, then I'm good to go. A special part about me is I'm pretty mature, so sometimes when I talk with older people or adults, I feel more comfortable. Throughout my experience, I believe working in a team, and it's harder to be a follower and easier to be a leader, but it doesn't mean anything because the most important thing is you actually learn something and gain experiences. As a co-chair, I would like to welcome all the delegates. See you soon and I hope you will have fun in the committee!
